Career Development In Action

Welcome back! A new year and an updated Student WorkSafe for career educators

Hello career educators! Some of you will already know me from my many years of attending the CES conference and doing workshops there. For those of you I haven’t previously crossed paths with, I’m Robin Schooley with the Young and New Worker team at WorkSafeBC. I’m happy to be a part of this forum and will be publishing a blog here every month. I’ve created a Young Worker Safety discussion topic on the forum and look forward to interacting with you there. I will use the discussion group to share resources and information to support workplace health and safety in career education and welcome you to join the discussion with ideas, suggestions, and feedback.

It’s been a time of flux for career education in the province, with new curriculum being introduced and more new teachers hired. Some of you may be brand new to career education. Others may be veterans and have been using our educator resources for years. What’s new for everyone, though, is the shift from Planning to Career Life Education. To ensure our resources continue to be relevant, we have updated Student WorkSafe our main resource for career education – to reflect the curriculum changes and to link it to the new “big picture” education goals and the ministry’s emphasis on real-life experiences, gaining business knowledge, and hands-on learning to “build better students and better citizens”.

For those of you who haven’t used Student WorkSafe before, it’s a free package of health and safety resources that can easily be embedded in career education. It includes an educator resource, an independent learning guide, and student resources. The educator resource includes personalized learning activities for delivery in a range of settings – from one on one, to small group, to an entire class. It also includes a pre-learning questionnaire to support self-reflection, and an analysis tool to help you configure learning activities to best engage students. There are also links to various online activities, resources, and videos. To access the workplace knowledge assessment and completion certification, please email the Young and New Worker team.   robin.schooley@worksafebc.com or helen.chandler@worksafebc.com

The independent learning guide is intended for students who want to take the course online or by distance. Lastly, the student resource page includes all the information and resources students will need to complete the activities.

Beyond Student WorkSafe, we have a range of resources to support your teachings. They are all located on our educator page. I will talk more about them in future blogs.

Stay tuned for the October blog which will include the announcement of our 2019 Student Safety Video Contest – there’s prize money for students and schools! Until then, I hope you’re having a good start to the 2018/2019 school year. Please feel free to contact myself or Helen  if you ever have any questions, ideas, or feedback.

  • Hi Alisson. Nice to hear from you! That's great that you find the resource and the Employability Skills Assessment useful. Please feel free to let me know if you have any feedback on the materials or if our team can assist you in any other way.
  • Thank you for the updated teacher resource - looks great. I also shared the Employability Skills from the conferenceboard.ca used in this resource to help build self awareness and goals with students.
